The Galaxy class was a Federation explorer that saw service during the latter half of the 24th century. The Galaxy was one of the largest and most powerful starships fielded by Starfleet during that period.
The maximum evacuation capacity of Galaxy-class ships were 15,000 people. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual)
The Romulans referred to this vessel as a "Cehlaer-class warbird" ("cehlaer" being Rihannsu for "galaxy"), and believed that, lack of cloak notwithstanding, it was a superior design to the D'deridex class. (Bait and Switch: "Flaihhsam s'Spahkh")
The class had largely gone out of production by the 25th century; however, a final production run of 28 hulls began launching in 2409 to fill losses in advance of the Odyssey class. This final series was nicknamed the Planet class, as all 28 hulls were named for Federation homeworlds. (Bait and Switch: "Shakedown Shenanigans")
