Deflector shields were force field-based devices that projected energy in a certain direction to absorb impacts from weapons, such as phasers, disruptors, transporters and photon torpedoes.

Multi-adaptive shields were deflector shields whose sensor signature was constantly changing when the shields were activated. (VOY: "The Raven", RIS Bouteina: Cloak, baby, Cloak!)

Deflector-shield output could be tuned to different wavelengths, to serve as "pennants" representing, for example, the star of a ship's homeport. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)
